INDIRECT EVAPORATIVE COOLERS FEATURE A HYPER EFFICIENT AIR TO AIR HEAT EXCHANGER. LET’S SEE HOW IT WORKS:

To begin the cooling process, hot air from outside enters the cooler through the inlet and is directed by a powerful electric fan towards the core.

The core, an air-to-air heat exchanger consisting of alternating dry and wet channels, cools the hot air without adding any moisture to it. As the air passes through the dry channels, a portion of the conditioned air is directed through the wet channels.

Here, through evaporation and conduction, the air gains moisture and heat and is then exhausted outside the building. However, no moisture is transferred between the dry and wet channels; only heat is transferred, allowing the air in the dry channels to become progressively cooler without gaining any moisture.

Finally, the cooled air is passed into the building, and Seeley International’s indirect evaporative coolers may feature counterflow (Climate Wizard) or M-Cycle (Coolerado) air-to-air heat exchangers.

UNDERSTANDING INDIRECT EVAPORATIVE COOLING IN THE PSYCHROMETRIC CHART

The psychrometric chart uses colored lines to compare the performance of indirect evaporative coolers, such as the Climate Wizard, with that of direct evaporative coolers on hot days.

For instance, when fresh air enters a direct evaporative air cooler at 38°C dry-bulb and 15% relative humidity, it passes through a wet cooling pad and emerges cool and moist at about 22°C dry-bulb and 75% relative humidity, having travelled along the wet-bulb line and gained approximately 6.5 grams/kg (dry air) of moisture.

In contrast, when the same air enters a Climate Wizard indirect evaporative air cooler, it travels through the dry channel where it is super-cooled and exits at about 16°C, having undergone a cooling process along the constant moisture line that doesn’t add any moisture.

The wet-bulb effectiveness of indirect evaporative coolers like the Climate Wizard is around 125%, compared to approximately 85% for regular direct air coolers. Additionally, Climate Wizard’s indirect evaporative coolers can include a direct evaporative cooling process (Supercool stage) after the indirect evaporative process, providing an extra temperature reduction while adding very little water content.
